Pub landlord sentenced to 2 years

Apr 13, 2011

A pub landlord has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for gross negligence manslaughter.

A landlord has been jailed for manslaughter after a man plunged to his death through a celler door and was undiscovered for 3 days as the bar owner was away on a health and safety  course                                 Leeds Crown Court heard that the landlord failed to lock the door, despite there having been several occurances of patrons mistaking it for a toilet or falling through it, resulting in injuries                               The judge stated that even the most rudimentory risk assessment would have shown that this was an accident waiting to happen, but it was in fact an accident that had happened twice already. Despite this the landlord had taken no steps to address the danger. The North Yorkshire police inspector handling the case stated that this case highlights the ultimate responsibility of business owners and managers to ensure health and safety laws are followed to the highest standards
